I don’t smoke and I don’t encourage smoking. Two floors down from my home is a family of chain smokers. We are treated to their second hand smoke on a daily basis and really hope that they would move out one day. But there was a time when I was more tolerant of smokers. My maternal grandmother was a labourer, not very different from the Samsui women. She smoked and I was close to her. I was never perturbed by her habit. Yet, I was never influenced to smoke like her. May maternal grandfather was also a smoker. I was close to him too and in spite of their negative influences, I’ve never picked up the habit. Has the URA overreacted to a complaint from a member of the public?
Chua Lam put it very succinctly. If a 20 min TV program can lead young people astray, then something must be very wrong with the educational system.
