BMW Doctor Scandal in Kelantan: How Social Media Turned Infidelity Into Mob Justice

I’m disgusted. It all started with the juicy episode involving that BMW-driving doctor in Kelantan who was caught with another man’s wife. The video of a woman in sexy grey dress getting out of a BMW then getting back in again went viral with invisible keyboard warriors and virtual moralists vilifying and the doctor, coming up with memes like 小鸟医人. These folks enjoyed a rare opportunity to lecture someone with an IQ many times theirs.

Meanwhile, there was an outpouring of sympathy for the cuckolded man, especially after he put up an emotive, self-pitying post on social media. They seemed to approve of him putting up video evidence of his wife’s infidelity on social media, dragging the adulterous couple into the virtual stoning pit to let mob justice take over. The doctor wisely performed damage control, sought forgiveness from his wife who publicly declared that she had forgiven him. The woman in that grey dress had remained silent all this while. We can’t hear her side of her story, but believe it or not, the moralists were not satisfied, saying that the doctor’s wife should not have forgiven him so easily. I was thinking, who’s the one destroying families?

Sadly, that’s not the end of the story. Some keyboard warriors went all out to ruin the doctor’s career. Someone leaked CCTV footage from the clinic and suggested that the doctor has been engaging in amorous activities inside the clinic with one or more of his nurses. The true nature of the “moralists” was also exposed when some of them flashed photos of the nurses and made everyone guess which one did it. Who is the immoral one now? What business do these folks have judging other people whose sex lives have absolutely nothing to do with them? What if your daughter works in that clinic and guilty or not, she is lined up for the judgement of keyboard warriors who live by a lofty code of ethics and morals that nobody can verify. Are the lives of these keyboard moralists so pathetically boring that they need to dig up other people’s private lives for their own entertainment? Truly immoral are the ones who inflict maximum damage and enjoy seeing others suffer.

Yesterday morning, I checked my Facebook and found that the digging and spreading has not ended. Is this what that man who exposed his wife’s affair wanted? What if this becomes a trend? What if couples who have marital issues start exposing their spouses’ mistakes on social media and let mob justice do the dirty work of avenging on their behalf? My fears came true today. Facebook groups and pages started showing videos of other men and woman caught in hotel rooms with their secret lovers and the pathetic moralists are loving it. Technology really brings out some barbaric behaviour in human beings. Ironically, these are folks who wish to come across as moralists.
