Four Legs Good , Two Legs Better
Bipedalism is inherently unstable in fights and bipedal primates ran a lot slower than their counterparts that ran on all fours. Anthropologists theorised that standing upright enabled bipedal primates to hunt and throw spears more effectively. But there is another advantage that is seldom mentioned. Walking the same distance, the energy expenditure of a chimpanzee is much higher than that of a human. Bipedal primates could migrate over vast distances while their cousins on fours couldn’t. There’s even a joke that humans are such energy efficient walkers that you can’t lose weight by walking. That’s why bipedal primates have colonised almost every corner of the globe even before civilization. Our ancestors were great walkers and that is probably the biggest advantage of bipedalism.
